What Is Inflammation?

Inflammation is the body’s natural way of protecting itself. When you get a cut or a cold, your immune system kicks in to help you heal. This is called acute inflammation, and it’s a good thing.

But sometimes, the immune system doesn’t turn off when it should. It keeps sending out signals like there’s a threat, even when there isn’t one. This is known as chronic inflammation, and over time, it can wear down the body and contribute to health problems.

What Causes Chronic Inflammation?

Chronic inflammation usually builds up slowly, often from things we face in everyday life. Eating a lot of processed foods can put stress on the body over time. Long-term stress and poor sleep also play a big role, keeping your immune system on high alert when it should be resting. Not moving your body enough, even just walking, can make things worse by slowing down important healing processes. And finally, outside factors like pollution, smoke, or harsh chemicals can add to the inflammation your body is already trying to manage. It’s not always just one thing.

How Inflammation Might Show Up

The symptoms of chronic inflammation can be quiet and easy to overlook. You might feel tired all the time, even after a full night’s rest. It can be harder to concentrate, and you might notice brain fog or a general sense of feeling “off.” Some people experience body aches, joint stiffness, or bloating that seems to come out of nowhere. Skin issues like acne, rashes, or flare-ups can also be connected. You may have trouble sleeping or feel more anxious, moody, or low than usual. On their own, these signs might not seem serious—but together, they can point to something deeper going on inside the body.
